As I have stated in my about me, this blog was inspired by a class called Marketing Management. Besides being assigned to complete a blog, we also took part in managing a social media account. My group was in charge of the Facebook account for Arkansas State University's Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA). This gave our team members hands on experience on how to manage a social media account while also learning how to measure the effectiveness of it. This was a challenging task, to say the least, but it definitely taught me many valuable lessons about marketing and gave me a glimpse into a future marketing career.
As this project comes to end, I can look back and name a number of things I have learned throughout the course of this semester. First, I have learned that social media doesn't stop. Just when you think you are caught up, it is time to post again. Social media requires a constant commitment to be able to interact with your customers and promote your business or organization. We began managing this by utilizing the scheduling post tool, so that our posts were taken care of in advance to make sure all times were covered. Second, I learned how to read Facebook analytics. This tool provides so many options for how to measure the effectiveness of your Facebook page. We took advantage of this tool by using peak post times, analyzing our demographics, and by measuring the amount of engagement and reach for each post. These numbers are what marketers strive for, and the best part is that it is all for free. Third, I learned about common Facebook algorithms. Pictures and videos posted on Facebook see a much larger reach because this content is generated more than just words. Therefore, we tried to appeal to our target market and reach more students by using more pictures and videos. We began doing "Throwback Thursday" videos each week which proved to be highly successful. We even boosted one post for a giveaway that created more reach and awareness for our page. The boosted post, at a small cost of $10, reached over 5,000 people and even let us focus in our demographics. These lessons really gave me valuable insights into what it is like to manage a Facebook page, and how to do so 24/7.
All in all, I am very thankful for the opportunity to learn how to manage a social media page from an expert, Mrs. Siler. I feel very prepared to take on all future marketing endeavors with social media because of this project. Although this is only one forum, I believe this is truly the future of marketing. As always, I will have to adapt and upgrade to new forums to stay ahead of the game, but just learning one social media platform provided great real world experience. The PRSSA Facebook page has been a huge learning experience that I am proud to say I accomplished with the help of my team members!
Until next time,
